Petition

2 June 2021

We, the undersigned, utterly condemn the new ruling coalition's brutal pressure on the critical media and journalists in Montenegro.

As expected, the pressure had escalated this week: Darko Šuković, the editor of Antena M, as well as the columnist of that website Dragan Bursać, had received death threats.

The threats cause even more concerns, given the fact that they came from properly organized and technically literate far-right extremists; ideological successors of those who participated in all the post-Yugoslav wars, as well as in aggression of the Russian forces on Ukrain, where numerous war crimes were committed.

On top of everything are the threats of Dekratska Crna Gora (the Democrats), whose leader, Aleksa Bečić is the Chair of the Parliament. That political party had foremost, published an illegally recorded private conversation of a journalist Tamara Nikčević and opposition politician Miodrag Živković. Afterward, in an Orwellian-Stalinist-Kafkaesque manner, they filed criminal charges against T. Nikčević, due to the content of the private conversation, which they had previously recorded and eavesdropped.

Naturally, following this violence conducted by the Democrats, the extremists had joined the leaders of the ruling majority in combatting their critics. Editor and columnist of Antena M received death threats and bomb-throwing threats.

Events mentioned above were inevitable since the Montenegrin authorities have systematically been preparing the public for combat with critical media and independent intellectuals.

Prime minister Zdravko Krivokapić and his Deputy (and Security services coordinator) Dritan Abazović, are frequently commenting on the media activities. They are also sending threats and instructions to journalists, editors, and ownership structure members of critical media. A few days before the tormenting attack on Tamara Nikčević, the senior official of URA Miloš Konatar has explicitly marked that critical media are, as he said "quasi-media", and that the authors who are expressing criticism are "quasi-intellectuals". This is a clear example of the groundwork laying for the prosecution and violence against the journalists - Given the fact that the attack on them, according to the authority's statements, doesn't represent the attack on freedom of speech. Likewise, if they are quasi-journalists then the attack on them is a quasi-attack.

However, what concerns the most is the lack of reaction from international journalist organizations, which are promoting and defending press freedoms.

We demand prosecution and punishments of all those who are threatening to any journalist, regardless of gender, sexual, ideological, editorial, or any other affiliations. We, as well, demand the authorities to stop their intimidation strategy and to prevent further deterrence of the journalists, which can lead to shutting down of the opposition media.

We expect the Montenegrin judiciary to take lawful and fair action in criminal charges they had received in case of illegal recording and publishing of a Nikčević's private conversation.

In the end, from the international community, European Union in Montenegro in particular, we expect a consistent and indiscriminate defense of the European values, the values in which we, the undersigned strongly believe.
