Pride Parade 2011: A Test of Serbia's Social and Political Emancipation

A release

Belgrade, September 8, 2011.

The threats to organizers of the Belgrade Pride 2011 that are becoming more and more frequently clearly indicate an exceptionally well-planned campaign meant not only to prevent the Pride itself but also to create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among citizens. And the ultimate goal of this campaign is to destabilize the country at the time when crucial decisions on Serbia's future are to be made. Once again a Pride Parade is being instrumentalized - it is instrumentalized by radical groups from the extreme rights that have been for days freely poisoning the public opinion and openly invoking violence. No wonder why some parts of academic and political elites have joined the campaign with their full names - they come from the same circles now trying at all costs to obstruct Serbia's EU candidacy.

The actual government has already hesitated too long about taking proper measures against these calls for violence. It would, therefore, be nothing but an accomplice should another wave of uninhibited violence and destruction mark this year's Belgrade Pride.

It is common knowledge that the majority of Serbia's population disapproves LBGT persons. However, like in any other country, this is the reason more why social elites and the media committed to modernization of the society should work on the change in such an attitude towards the "other and different," recognition of and respect for differences. What makes this year's Pride so important is the fact that the general public is gradually accepting differences and recognizing them, notwithstanding.

The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia calls upon the actual government to assume its obligation and in due time prevent ill-treatment of LGBT persons and those standing for their rights.
