BUILDING BRIDGES, NOT WALLS –
THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES IN PEACEBUILDING

6–8 June 2014

 

From June 6 till June 8, 2014 students of the Faculty of Legal and Business Studies “„Dr Lazar Vrkatić“ in Novi Sad hosted their peers from the University of Tuzla and the University „Džemal Bijedić“ in Mostar. This was sixth in a row student exchange program involving students from Novi Sad. The program is realized under the project “Build Bridges, not Walls: The Role of University in Peace-Building” implemented by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia.

Guest students and their hosts attended lectures of the course “Intercultural Understanding, Human Rights and Reconciliation” that has been introduced in paralel in five universities in the region. They discussed three topics with lecturers Srđan Milošević of the Institute of Modern History of Serbia (“Romanticized Historiography vs. Critical Historiography”), historian Milivoje Bešlin (“Ideological Misuse of the Past: Historical Revisionism in the Service of Nationalism”) and Nebojša Tasić (“Facing the Past, Facing the Present”).

Students also paid a visit to the government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and were welcomed by Miroslav Vasin, provincial secretary of economy, employment and gender equality.
